About Fitts-Woolard Hall
The College of Engineering’s newest academic and research building, Fitts-Woolard Hall, is home to the following:
- Operations Research Program (OR)
- Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE)
- Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE)
- Dean’s Administration Office
This building unified the College of Engineering on Centennial Campus.
The construction of the 227,000 square foot building was made possible by a unique public-private partnership. Via a bond referendum, North Carolina voters provided half of the $150 million needed for the building. NC State secured the remaining funding through private philanthropy fueled by the generous support of alumni and friends.
The building has been named to honor Edward P. Fitts, Jr. (ISE ‘61) and his wife, Debra, and Edgar S. Woolard, Jr. (ISE ‘56) and his wife, Peggy. The families have demonstrated their dedication to NC State and the College of Engineering through their service and transformative philanthropic support. Fitts-Woolard Hall honors their commitment to the College of Engineering’s continued growth and progress.
Fitts-Woolard Hall is an innovation hub, catalyzing cross-discipline research and fostering collaboration with industry partners.
From the Dean
I want to welcome you to Fitts-Woolard Hall. The building itself was constructed with an “engineering on display” theme. The laboratory spaces, especially on the first and second floor, are front and center so that you, our visitors, can see the vital work that’s going on in the building. We’re talking about advanced interdisciplinary work in manufacturing, smart construction, health systems engineering, environmental engineering and many other areas.
The building itself will serve as a classroom because we will see and capture real-time data on energy consumption, water usage and many other metrics associated with engineering. For example, the stairs act as a teaching lab. The exposed truss system on the stairs enables professors and students to analyze the structure. This information is something they will use in their classes.
I want to thank everyone who has been involved in making Fitts-Woolard Hall a reality. We appreciate the interest and commitment of the alumni, industry partners and North Carolina people. Our commitment is to make you prouder and prouder of being part of this great university every day.
Giving Opportunities
The state of North Carolina and the university have provided much of the funding for the construction of the building. The College needs the help of its alumni and friends to raise the remaining funds to break ground on this signature project that will impact our students for generations to come.
The Cornerstone Society
The Cornerstone Society provides an opportunity for you to name a space of your choosing in the new building or existing engineering buildings on Centennial Campus. Naming opportunities begin at $100,000. As a member of this exclusive society, you will have your name permanently associated with the space of your choosing. Your gift will be recognized in a central location in the new Fitts-Woolard Hall and a special recognition biography and photo. In addition, as a Cornerstone Society member, you will be invited to exclusive events, including the dedication of the new building.
Dean’s Oval Club
The Dean’s Oval Club was created to give more individuals and companies the opportunity to invest in the Fitts-Woolard Hall Project (formerly the Engineering Oval Project). To underscore the importance of supporting the construction of the newly named Fitts-Woolard Hall, Dean Louis A. Martin-Vega and his wife, Mrs. Maggie Martin, gave a leadership gift to launch the new Dean’s Oval Club. Your gift of $50,000 to $100,000 toward the construction of Fitts-Woolard Hall gives you the honor of membership in this exclusive group of visionaries. As a member of the Dean’s Oval Club, you will receive permanent recognition with a donor profile in a central location in Fitts-Woolard Hall and invitations to exclusive events, including the dedication of the new building.
The Dean’s Young Alumni Oval Club
The Dean’s Young Alumni Oval Club is a special offer that gives our young alumni up to 15 years out from graduation the opportunity to invest in the Fitts-Woolard Hall Project (formerly the Engineering Oval Project). To underscore the importance of supporting the construction of the newly named Fitts-Woolard Hall, Dean Louis A. Martin-Vega and his wife, Mrs. Maggie Martin, gave a leadership gift to launch the new Dean’s Engineering Building Oval Club and the Dean’s Young Alumni Oval Club. Young alumni who give $25,000 over five years toward the construction of Fitts-Woolard Hall will receive the honor of membership in this exclusive group of visionaries. As a member of the Dean’s Young Alumni Oval Club, you will receive permanent recognition with a donor profile in a central location in Fitts-Woolard Hall and invitations to exclusive events, including the dedication of the new building.
